I feel like I missed a bunch of stuff about Eileen in my previous post, so here’s a post just for our sweet baby girl!
She is very ticklish! She is ticklish on her belly, armpit, behind the knees and her chin!! She laughs loudly and uncontrollably.
She likes to mess up all the food on her tray, unless there is something she doesn’t like, she will keep those items in a pile and push them to the edge of her tray. Right now she doesn’t like mangos, tomatoes, carrots, oranges and sweet potatoes- all orange/red things.
She is obsessed with zippers, buttons, snaps, and any shinny hardware (buckles, screws and nails). She needs to thoroughly investigate these things with her pointer finger.
She likes to point at all the faces in the story books we read, especially the eyeballs.
She lifts the letters out of the foam floor mats, and when I put the letters back she gives me a disapproving look and lifts them up again.
She is such a good sleeper and a serious chatter box! If I don’t pick her up from her crib right away she rolls over and goes back to sleep. Ga Ga is her new favourite consonant sound to make. A couple times she has mimicked what we are saying.
Diaper changes have become very hard because she doesn’t like to lie on her back anymore, so she rolls over and sits up.
When she gets really excited she thrashes her limbs and body around. In bed she will face plant into the mattress and start laughing.
She’s such a sweetheart. She is really calm and patient but full of life and energy at the same time

Wow, one year! I am trying to remember all the good times but it’s so hard. Everything was such a blur in the beginning. This has been the best year of my life. I am just so grateful, words cannot express.
Ewan started making kissing noises to Kyle and I, especially when we are kissing his head. He is so sweet and full of expression. He loves to climb and smack objects together, make noise, zoom around the house and cuddle. Ewan joined Sara and I in laughter during our conversation a couple of weeks ago, it was really cute.
Eileen is crawling from room to room and taking her time exploring every detail along the way. The first thing she did when she was in the kitchen was open a cabinet drawer. Ewan has been crawling for months and only once came close to discovering that the drawers open. Eileen was very sick this month with a high fever lasting 4 days. Thanks to Grandpa Maclean for all the medical advice and talking us through it. The highest her fever got was 39.6, which was scary. Eileen handled it like a champ though.
Ewan crawls circles around Eileen. They are like the tortoise and the hare. Eileen is a lot happier now that she is mobile. She laughs out loud while crawling forward.
Sara lent us a walking toy that helps kids learn to walk. Immediately Ewan pulled himself up and started walking with the toy. He picks up new skills extremely easily. He learned how to drink from a straw and eat from a snack pack in a day. Eileen isn’t as quick to learn, it takes her time to figure things out.
They are sleeping through the night about half the time. Hopefully this increases as I am preparing to return to work. Eileen was having troubles falling asleep this past week, she isn’t crying, in fact she is laughing and rolling around her crib. She has been laughing a lot lately. Just expression of pure joy! She’s been laughing in her crib while Ewan is crying in his crib. Ewan has three more teeth along his top gums.
A couple times this month Ewan crawled over to Eileen and pushed her chest knocking her over. It seemed very deliberate. Eileen continues to poke Ewan in the eye with her pointer finger, especially when breastfeeding. It’s so cute to watch her raise her hand with her finger already pointing out towards his eye. Ewan often breastfeeds with his hand over his eye for protection, so now Eileen is poking him in the ear.
Diana and I flew to Courtenay with Eileen and Ewan to celebrate Grandma and Grandpa Shivas’ belated 40 wedding anniversary. It was a very quick 46 hour trip, but worth it! During the trip Eileen and Ewan picked up a head cold and then shared it with Kyle and I. We also met Heather’s new baby boy, Bryce, and Gina’s twins George and Madelyn.
On Sunday we celebrated Eileen and Ewan’s 1st birthday. Kyle made a banana cake with yogurt and peanut butter icing, and they opened gifts. All the grandparents, auntie Diana and Jeremy attended the party.

Yesterday Eileen took her first forward crawling steps. She has been so close all week, which had led to a lot of face plants. Over the last three weeks Eileen has been very quick to cry and hard to console. I think she’s been really frustrated seeing Ewan crawling everywhere and not being able to join him.
This morning Kyle said “Hi Eileen” and she clearly said “Hi” back. Could we get her to do it again? Maybe not right away, but this was definitely her first word!! Big weekend for Eileen.
This post is on time! Eileen and Ewan are 11 months old today.
Ewan continues his mobility training. He pulls himself up on every ledge he comes across. He can walk holding on to furniture. This has lead to a fair amount of tumbling and falling on his head ☹️. Ewan has discovered how to open the wipes container, and it’s his new favourite thing. He also loves taking everything off the shelf. When I start to tidy things up and put them back he comes racing over to pull it all off again.
Ewan and Eileen had eggs and halibut yesterday. They did not like the taste of either. Ewan reluctantly ate it but Eileen flat out refused. As soon as it touched her lips she had a big dramatic reaction spitting, scrunching her face and shivering! She is definitely a pickier eater than Ewan.
Their eating skills are improving. They are handling bigger chunks of food. They’ve been feasting on home made sourdough bread dipped in soup for lunch. We just added lunch time meals this week.
We went outside today and braved the cold. We only went for a short 20 minute walk around the block, Eileen was not happy. I think she didn’t like not being able to suck on her fingers haha!
